Malus ioensis 'Plena' - Crab Apple

Malus ioensis 'Plena' is excellent crab apple tree for blossom but not so good for fruit.

This is a relatively small tree, easy care and very hardy it one of the most sought after flowering crab apple trees for small gardens and landscaping.

Reaching around 5m in height with a crown spread of 4m it works well as street tree.

Brilliant pink buds (see picture right) open a pale pink and fade to white in the first days. Malus ioensis 'Plena' has flowers are fragrant and attract bees. Foliage has good autumn color from orange to red.

Care

Well drained soil.
Sunny position.
Humus rich soil, mulch well to retain moisture in summer.
Stake young trees to maintain an upright trunk.
Water young trees well with a liquid seaweed fertilizer.
Pruning is generally not required.
A general all purpose fertilizer in early spring as foliage appears, water in well.
Mulch in late spring.
Keep the area beneath Malus ioensis 'Plena' weed free.
