Ficus lyrata : Wholesale Nurseries Tubestock to Advanced

Ficus lyrata is also known as the 'Fiddle Fig' or 'Fiddle leaved fig' and is a popular indoor plant.

Large glossy green foliage, heavily veined with pale green to yellow and the leaves are shaped a little like a fiddle with a slight 'waist' in the middle of each leaf. Used widely as an indoor plant, and suited to growing in the garden in warmer climates.

Young specimens are available at good nurseries, however larger plants are still reasonably pricey in Australia.

Care

A warm position in filtered light is essential, as is a humus rich moist well drained soil. The 'Fiddle Fig' does not do well outdoors in cooler climates, but grows well indoors and is widely used as an office plant.

• rotate plants every few days to maintain an even growth pattern

Pruning

• Prune Ficus lyrata, if required in spring as new growth commences
• pruning can gentle, like tip pruning to encourage a bushy habit
• hard pruning can be carried out in spring if required
• pruned cutting can generally be trimmed back and used to strike new plants, cutting will often send out roots in clean water. Striking using a rooting hormone and a fine potting mix works as well.
