Dwarf fruit trees are usually fruit trees that have been grafted onto 'dwarfing rootstock' this is particularly true of dwarf citrus trees where the rootstock 'flying dragon' is widely used. Semi dwarf fruit trees are more common in other types of fruit tree such as Apple, Avocado and Mango.

Semi dwarf fruit trees are grafted onto rootstock such as M27, M106 and M9.

So how big will a dwarf fruit tree grow? Those classed as 'dwarf trees' should be about 1/3 the size of the true form, those classed as 'semi dwarf trees' should reach around 1/2 the size of the true form. Other factors also come into play with the size of fruit trees.

Other Factors to affecting the size of dwarf and semi-dwarf fruit trees.

• If a dwarf fruit tree is grown in a container or pot. Generally any plant grown in a container will have growth restricted.
• In ground growing conditions. The better the conditions, soil structure, fertility and climate the bigger the eventual size of the tree. This is true for dwarf fruit trees as well.
• Pruning, nearly all fruit trees, including citrus trees can be pruned to control size.
