Photinia Robusta - Wholesale Nurseries in Australia

Photinia robusta (Photinia x fraseri 'Robusta') is an excellent hedging or screening plant, tough, drought tolerant one established and with attractive new red growth in spring and white flowers. Photinia robusta will highly form a dense screen or hedge and is easily pruned back to maintain shape.

Photinia Robusta - Plant Profile

Used as a hedging plant, Photinia Robusta is an evergreen shrub that will reach to around 5m in height. Glossy green foliage and brilliant red new growth are features. More correctly named Photinia x fraseri 'Robusta' this is a hybrid of P. glabra x P. serratifolia. Photinia are originally from Asia, India through to China and Thailand, warm temperate climates.

In spring the white flowers are attractive although often pruned away on formal hedges. Photinia robusta is an excellent choice for hedges due to its dense growth habit and drought tolerant nature.

Care

A well drained soil with some extra moisture during very dry summers. Mulch to maintain a cool root run. Fertilize with a general purpose slow release fertilizer in spring.

Pruning

Can be grown as a hedge or as a specimen tree. As a hedge regular pruning will promote flushes of the new red growth.

Varieties

  • Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is a smaller growing cultivar to around 2 - 3m
  • Photinia x fraseri 'Super Hedge' is a more upright cultivar
