Casuarina cunninghamia or 'River Sheoak'

Casuarina cunninghamia or 'River Sheoak' is a versatile tree that naturally occurs from The Northern Territory through Queensland and New South wales to Victoria.

GROWING CONDITIONS
Requiring a well drained soil, C. cunninghamia will reach around 15 - 20m depending on conditions. An upright tree but with pendulous branchlets make it an attractive ornamental tree in a larger setting. Excellent as a drought tolerant shade tree and can be used as a windbreak. Clay soils can be problematical as they can prevent drainage in long extended wet periods, although tolerant of periodic flooding.

USES
A matt forming root system make it a useful tree for erosion control, C. cunninghamia is also used as a timber tree for pulp and firewood. Also valued for its ability to 'fix nitrogen'. The same root system can make it difficult to grow other plants or grasses under the canopy.

The fine foliage gives it the name of 'Australian Pine' in the USA. Attractive to birds both for its bunches of rounded seed cones and as a nesting place for smaller birds.
